**Pompeii Plus** is the best option for visitors who want to explore not only the ancient city of Pompeii, but also some of the important Roman villas located beyond the main city walls.

In addition to the archaeological city, the ticket includes the **Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes, Villa Regina at Boscoreale and the Boscoreale Antiquarium**, together with access to the Pompeii Artebus shuttle service when operating and subject to available seats.

## What is Pompeii Plus?

Pompeii Plus is an extended entrance ticket for the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

While **Pompeii Express** gives access to the ancient city, Pompeii Plus also includes the suburban villas route.

The current official ticket includes:

- ancient city of Pompeii;
- Villa of the Mysteries;
- Villa of Diomedes;
- Villa Regina at Boscoreale;
- Antiquarium of Boscoreale;
- Pompeii Artebus shuttle service, subject to availability.

It is therefore particularly suitable for visitors who have more time available and want to discover the wider archaeological landscape around Pompeii.

## Pompeii Express or Pompeii Plus?

The main difference is simple.

### Pompeii Express

Pompeii Express includes the **ancient city only**.

It is usually the best choice if:

- this is your first visit;
- you have only a few hours available;
- you want to concentrate on the Forum, houses, baths, theatres and other monuments inside the city.

### Pompeii Plus

Pompeii Plus includes the ancient city **and the suburban villas**.

Choose it if:

- you have half a day or more;
- you particularly want to see the Villa of the Mysteries;
- you want to explore beyond the main archaeological city;
- you are interested in Roman villas and the ancient countryside surrounding Pompeii.

## Villa of the Mysteries

The **Villa of the Mysteries** is one of the most famous monuments in Pompeii.

Located outside the ancient city walls beyond Porta Ercolano, the villa is particularly renowned for its extraordinary large-scale fresco cycle painted against a deep red background.

The paintings have traditionally been connected with Dionysian rites, although their exact interpretation remains debated.

The villa was both an elegant residence and, during part of its history, a productive agricultural estate.

It is reached through the internal Pompeii Plus route.

## Important: access to the Villa of the Mysteries

The Villa of the Mysteries should be visited as part of the Pompeii Plus itinerary from inside the archaeological park.

The Pompeii Artebus stop near the villa is used for onward transportation towards Boscoreale; it does **not** provide a separate external entrance to the Villa of the Mysteries.

Plan the villa as part of your walking route through Porta Ercolano.

## Villa of Diomedes

The **Villa of Diomedes** is another large suburban residence located along the ancient road beyond Porta Ercolano.

It is one of the most extensive villas in the Pompeian area and includes residential rooms, gardens and large underground spaces.

Its position outside the city walls illustrates how wealthy Roman families built substantial residences along the roads leading away from Pompeii.

Villa of Diomedes is included in Pompeii Plus when open to visitors.

## Villa Regina at Boscoreale

**Villa Regina** offers a very different experience.

Rather than a luxurious urban residence, it is a Roman agricultural villa that provides important evidence about farming and wine production in the countryside surrounding Mount Vesuvius.

Among its most characteristic features are the large storage containers used for agricultural products and the areas connected with wine production.

Visiting Villa Regina helps explain the economic relationship between Pompeii and the fertile Vesuvian countryside.

## Boscoreale Antiquarium

Next to Villa Regina is the **Antiquarium of Boscoreale**.

The museum presents archaeological finds that help reconstruct:

- the ancient Vesuvian landscape;
- agriculture;
- local plants and animals;
- everyday life;
- the relationship between Roman communities and the environment around Mount Vesuvius.

Together, Villa Regina and the Antiquarium provide useful context for understanding the territory beyond the city of Pompeii.

## Pompeii Artebus

Pompeii Plus includes use of the **Pompeii Artebus** shuttle service.

The shuttle connects different archaeological sites belonging to the wider Grande Pompei system.

For the Pompeii Plus itinerary, the relevant service connects Pompeii with Boscoreale.

The service is:

- free for visitors holding a valid Park ticket;
- subject to available seats;
- operated according to seasonal timetables.

Schedules can change because of traffic or operational conditions.

## How much time do you need for Pompeii Plus?

Pompeii Plus requires significantly more time than a standard visit to the ancient city.

For the main city alone, most first-time visitors should allow at least **3–4 hours**.

If you also want to visit:

- Villa of the Mysteries;
- Villa of Diomedes;
- Villa Regina;
- Boscoreale Antiquarium;

you should consider dedicating **at least half a day**, and potentially longer if you want to explore without rushing.

## Can you upgrade Pompeii Express?

Yes.

If you already hold a **Pompeii Express** ticket, the Archaeological Park currently allows you to add access to the suburban villas.

The supplementary ticket can be purchased at the beginning of the suburban villas route at:

**Porta Ercolano – Street of the Tombs**

Payment is cashless.

If you already know before arriving that you want to visit the villas, choosing Pompeii Plus from the beginning is usually simpler.

## Can the suburban villas ticket be purchased separately?

No.

The suburban villas route is not sold as a completely independent stand-alone ticket.

You must either:

- purchase Pompeii Plus;
- or add the suburban-villas supplement to an existing Pompeii Express ticket under the conditions established by the Archaeological Park.

## Is Pompeii Plus valid for more than one entry?

No.

Pompeii Plus is normally valid for **one entrance**.

You cannot leave the archaeological route and later return to the same site using the same ticket.

Plan your itinerary carefully before exiting.

## Pompeii Plus is not the same as the Grande Pompei 3-day ticket

Pompeii Plus should not be confused with the wider **Grande Pompei multi-site ticket**.

The Grande Pompei ticket includes additional archaeological sites such as Oplontis and Stabiae and has different validity conditions.

Pompeii Plus is designed specifically around:

- the ancient city of Pompeii;
- suburban villas;
- Villa Regina;
- Boscoreale Antiquarium.

For most visitors interested mainly in Pompeii and the Villa of the Mysteries, Pompeii Plus is the more straightforward option.

## Where should you start the suburban villas route?

The route towards the Villa of the Mysteries and Villa of Diomedes begins from the area of **Porta Ercolano**.

The official Park currently sets a separate last access time through Porta Ercolano for visitors continuing towards the villas.

Do not leave the suburban section until the very end of your visit if closing time is approaching.

Check the current Park timetable before travelling.

## What should you wear?

Pompeii Plus involves considerably more walking than a short Pompeii Express visit.

Wear:

- comfortable closed shoes;
- clothing suitable for the season;
- hat and sunscreen in summer;
- weather protection when necessary.

Bring enough drinking water, particularly during warmer months.

## Who should choose Pompeii Plus?

Pompeii Plus is particularly recommended if:

- you want to see the Villa of the Mysteries;
- you are interested in Roman villas;
- you have already visited the main city before;
- you have at least half a day available;
- you want to understand Pompeii in the context of the wider Vesuvian landscape.

If you have only two or three hours, Pompeii Express will normally be more practical.
